Sugarettes Baton Twirling Team Wins National Title and Awarded Special Honor |

St. Louis’ most established baton twirling team, the Sugarettes, have once again earned the title of national champions – thanks to a well-choreographed routine titled “Monkeys.” This July, the team traveled to the University of Notre Dame to compete in America’s Youth on Parade. This week-long competition brought together individual twirlers as well as twirling teams from across the nation and the globe. This year, teams from England, the Virgin Islands and Canada joined in the event. After winning the Missouri State competition this past March, directors Sugar Smith and Holly James were among the first to celebrate the win. “Winning isn’t our focus, but it sure feels good when your hard work pays off,” said Smith, founder and director of the Sugarettes. Not only was the team awarded with the title of U.S. National Junior Half-Time Team champions, they were recognized for the best overall half-time team in all categories. “This award is truly an honor,” said James. “We competed with over 40 teams in this category and to be recognized as the best half-time show is one of our greatest accomplishments.” The team earned also placed 7th in the national twirling team competition. “We had a successful week of competing, not only as a team but also in the individual competition.” explained James. Individual winners were: · Holly Hackney, Two-baton champion for the Intermediate division, age 16 · Andrea Chandler, placed in the top 20 in the World Open Solo, Advanced division, age 20 Over the past 40 years, the team has earned numerous state, national and world titles.
